THE CUSTOMER

Supplying thermal energy to the two communities of Toblach/Dobbiaco and Innichen/San Candido, the district heating plant is a pioneer in South Tyrol for producing ecologically friendly energy. The ORC module was the first to be installed in South Tyrol, in 2003, and the visitors’ display opened in 2005 is unique to all of Europe.

THE NEED

Fernheizwerk Toblach-Innichen operates a biomass plant in which wood chips, bark, and sawdust are fed to a combustion boiler to produce thermal energy. Possible implementation of an ORC module to utilize the heat was examined by Turboden’s technical advisers.

OUR SOLUTION

Research and evaluation carried out by Turboden’s advisers led Turboden to offer an ORC unit of 1.5 MWe to the customer. The thermal energy from the biomass burned in the combustion boiler is exploited to generate 1500 kW of electrical power. The exhaust heat released after the process is used to supply two communities with district heating. This plant is the first ORC-based biomass plant in South Tyrol.
