THE CUSTOMER

Starwood MDF A.Ş. has been engaged in activities in the forest products sector for 4 generations, takıng its place among Turkey’s largest 150 industrial firms. The company produces the greatest volume of chipboard under a single roof, with a production of 3.300 cubic meters (m3) of MDF and particle board daily, in its 4 chipboard production lines.

THE NEED

For their new MDF production line, Starwood was planning to build a new concept plant that could both produce electrical power and thermal power necessary for the MDF production. In this way, Starwood was planning to both enter the biomass-based electric power generation market and to increase their MDF production capacity. In order to achieve such result, a system that could both produce electrical power and thermal power at conditions suitable for the process was needed. System’s global efficiency and low operational costs were the project’s drivers.

OUR SOLUTION

Turboden supplies a 5,5 MWe co-generation ORC unit, Turboden 60 CHP. The plant is equipped with a 50 MW thermal biomass boiler fed with process’ biomass waste and forestal waste. A fraction of 35 MW thermal power from the boiler – under the form of thermal oil at 300°C – are employed to feed a Turboden 60-CHP unit. The ORC produces 5,5 MW electric that are sold to the electrical grid at subsidized tariff. As second output, the ORC produces 29 MW thermal under the form of pressurized water at 110°C that are employed for some MDF production consumptions such as the dryers and ambient heat. As the ORC has been produced in Turkey from the local company “Turboden Turkey A.Ş., Starwood will benefit from an additional feed-in tariff of 20 USD/MWh in addition to the base tariff 133 USD/MWh.
