THE CUSTOMER

SWM is successfully expanding its development both in the electricity and heat renewable energies sectors. The most recent additions to the SWM Sauerlach power plant are two geothermal plants in Dürrnhaar and Kirchstockach. These plants realized by Turboden are in operation since 2012 in the south of Munich. The two power stations have an overall electrical output of 11 megawatts. They are technically comparable to the geothermal power plant of SWM in Sauerlach. SWM has become leader of geothermal power in Germany, thanks to many years of operating experience and successful results. SWM has acquired the two power stations from HOCHTIEF PPP Solutions GmbH and BayWa r.e. Renewable energy GmbH, a subsidiary of BayWa AG, which implemented and operated the plants until 2016.

THE NEED

Production of base load electricity and heat from renewable resource. Geothermal water available at 4 to 5 km depth can be extracted to produce electricity and heat for households in the southern Germany. Duerrnhaar and Kirchstockach are two villages in the suburbs of Munich.

OUR SOLUTION

Two ORC units of 5.6 MWe each are installed in Dürrnhaar and Kirchstockach. The two plants are located very near each other (5 km distance) in the country side of Munich. Turboden has delivered the EPC turn-key solution for the equipment above ground. Very stringent noise limits have been observed and non-flammable fluid has been adopted in order to minimize the environmental risk in the forestry area of installation.
