THE CUSTOMER
Allium Energy is a fourth-generation business. Owned and managed the Todd family.
In 2015 Allium Energy was formed, split from the family’s Waste Management business. Todd Waste Management was an innovative waste management company, operating collection and disposal services in the North of England, including the manufacture of fuels from waste.
Allium Energy specializes in Energy from Organic waste. Using the processes: Transform, Restore, Convert. Operating: Composting plants, Biomass, Land Restoration, Anaerobic digestion and Renewable power generation. https://www.alliumenergy.co.uk/
THE NEED
Allium Energy produces compost from mixed organic waste. At the end of the composting process the non-organic waste is separated from organic. This non-organic, paper, card, plastic, textile is currently sent to landfill. As an Energy from Organic focused business, Allium wanted to find a local, sustainable use for this non-recyclable waste, to generate a new income stream. This waste will be combined with RDF and used as fuel to generate power, which will be distributed to local businesses / national grid. Plus heat, which will be for drying biomass and agricultural crops.
OUR SOLUTION
A 1.3 MWe Turboden ORC system is installed to generate heat and power on site and sell back to the grid. Compost waste will be collected and organics from the waste extracted and processed to produce compost. Non-compostable material such as plastics will be combined with Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) and fed into the grate furnace. A thermal oil boiler is installed on site to recovers the heat available in the gases after combustion to feed an ORC turbogenerator with hot oil at 310°C. ORC generates 1.3 MWe of electrical power. The ORC is water cooled in order to be CHP ready in case of future heat usage.
