THE CUSTOMER

Energy Development Corporation (EDC) is the Lopez Group’s global and diversified renewable energy company. With over 40 years of pioneering sustainable practices, it is the Philippines’ leading 100% renewable energy producer with an installed capacity of 1,480.19 MW which accounts for about 20% of the country’s total installed RE capacity. With geothermal its primary source of power, EDC’s 1185.40 MW provides around 61% of the country’s total installed geothermal capacity.

THE NEED

EDC was looking for an expansion of the existing Macban geothermal field, without drilling new wells, exploiting the hot separated water after the single flash plant. In such case it has been possible to utilize the ORC technology to recover the heat from the separated water before reinjecting it back in the reservoir.

OUR SOLUTION

Turboden built a 29 MW ORC binary plant, an expansion of the existing 140 MW installed capacity with flash technology in the Bac-Man geothermal field, operated by BGI (a wholly owned subsidiary of EDC). The ORC plant was inserted along the brine reinjection line currently present at the site (bottoming application). The ORC cycle has two pressure levels, with hydrocarbon-based working fluids, water cooling with cooling towers and an acid dosing system for scaling inhibition.
