The Role of Turboden Compressors for High-Temperature Heat Pumps in Energy Savings for Companies

03 August 2026

Energy efficiency has become a strategic priority for companies with high heat and electricity consumption. Pressure on energy costs, combined with decarbonization goals and a growing focus on the sustainability of production processes, is driving companies to seek solutions that can reduce consumption without compromising operational continuity and reliability.

Among the technologies that can have a tangible impact on this path, compressors for high-temperature heat pumps are playing an increasingly important role. This is where Turboden comes in: the company specializes in the design and manufacture of systems for efficient energy conversion and recovery, with compression solutions designed to combine high performance with long-term energy savings.

Why industrial compression is a key driver of energy efficiency

Many production processes waste large amounts of low- and medium-temperature thermal energy every day: waste heat that, in most cases, is released into the environment without being utilized. Recovering this energy, rather than wasting it, is one of the most effective ways to reduce energy consumption and lower a company’s operating costs.

This is where industrial compression plays a decisive role. Waste heat, available at low temperatures, is absorbed by a working fluid. By compressing this fluid, its pressure and temperature are increased, thereby returning energy, which would otherwise be lost, to the process at a usable temperature.

This principle translates into two complementary approaches that are particularly effective on an industrial scale: the use of compression to raise the heat to temperatures useful for the process, and the recompression of steam to reuse its energy content. In both cases, the effectiveness of the energy savings depends to a decisive extent on the quality, reliability, and efficiency of the turbomachinery used.

HIT compressors for high-temperature heat pumps

HIT compressors are an integrally geared product line developed by Turboden specifically for use with natural refrigerants in closed-cycle applications within high-temperature heat pumps. This solution combines the robustness and reliability typical of heavy-duty machines with the flexibility and competitiveness demanded by the thermal decarbonization market.

Their contribution to energy savings is particularly evident in high-temperature heat pumps, which are used to produce hot water and/or steam. In these systems, the compressor raises the recovered heat, often from process waste heat or low-temperature sources, to the levels required by the end-user, fully or partially replacing fossil-fuel-fired generators. The result is a significant reduction in primary energy consumption and related emissions, while maintaining the same amount of useful heat supplied to the process.

Steam compressors and MVR systems

In addition to heat pumps, a second family of compressors is designed for water vapor compression and MVR systems, which stands for Mechanical Vapor Recompression. This technology directly influences thermal processes in which steam serves as the primary energy carrier.

The principle behind mechanical vapor recompression is as simple as it is effective: instead of condensing and discharging the steam generated by a process, the compressor recompresses it, raising its pressure and saturation temperature until it can once again be used as a heat source. In this way, the steam, which would otherwise be considered waste, is reintroduced into the production cycle.

The energy savings are particularly evident in evaporation, concentration, and drying processes, where the demand for steam is continuous and significant. Recompressing existing steam, rather than generating new steam, makes it possible to drastically reduce the demand for primary energy and fresh steam, with direct benefits for operating costs and the environmental footprint of the processes.

The unique advantages of Turboden technology

What makes Turboden compressors a concrete tool for energy savings is, first and foremost, their proprietary turbomachinery design, developed specifically for heat pump and MVR system applications. Designing the compressor from the outset for these applications, rather than adapting off-the-shelf machines, allows for maximum efficiency under actual operating conditions: for the same amount of useful heat delivered, this results in lower energy consumption and, consequently, lower operating costs.

The wide range of power ratings available also contributes to efficiency: from 500 kW up to 20 MW mechanical for HIT compressors and between 100 kW and 10 MW mechanical for steam compressors. Being able to size the machine to the actual process requirements prevents oversizing and operation outside the optimal range, two of the main causes of energy waste in industrial plants.

Finally, the entire product line is united by a clear design philosophy: at Turboden, we develop every compressor to ensure excellent performance, uncompromising safety, and long-term sustainability. It is the combination of these factors that ensures energy savings are not a one-time result, but a stable and lasting benefit throughout the system’s entire life cycle.

Industrial compression: an investment in energy savings

Recovering lost heat and reducing primary energy demand is no longer just an environmental goal, but a strategic choice for a company’s competitiveness. Whether it’s raising heat to temperatures useful for the process using high-temperature heat pumps or reusing steam through MVR systems, Turboden’s compressors make it possible to transform an energy cost into a concrete and measurable opportunity for savings.

Choosing technology that is specifically designed for these applications is what ensures that the benefits remain consistent over time.
